Ponnani is the only port in Malappuram District of Kerala State. It is a tidal port, mainly used by the fishing industry. It is situated at the mouth of Bharathappuzha River, the second longest river of Kerala and is bounded by the Arabian Sea on the west.

Historical Importance of Ponnani

Ponnani is believed as one of the ancient ports in Kerala. Its historical importance ties with the belief that the port Tyndis mentioned in the book Periplus of the Erythraean Sea which was written in AD 1st Century is none other than the Ponnani Port.

In ancient decades, there is a custom in the Brahmin Temples of Ponnani that an elephant made of Gold was put for Darshan. From this custom, it is believed that the name Ponnani [from the term Ponnana] is arised. There is another legend that the land of brahmin ruler Ponnan is laterly known as Ponnani. In Malabar Manual, William Logan mentioned that the name is Ponnani may be arised from the Arabian Gold Coins [Arabiponnu] flown to this area during the ancient decades.

Certain remnants are presently existing as evidences for the ancient and historical importance of Ponnani. The boundary stone of 20 feet height, separating the sea area which is made in 1895 is one of the examples for these remnants. The Valiya Juma Ath Mosque which is known as Cheriya Makka is believed to be constructed during the Hijra Year 925.
